Soil Pollution Is Equally As Bad As Air Pollution
There’s a good deal of talk about air pollution and how it’s damaging our planet, but not a lot of talk about soil pollution. Although many folks are not informed about soil pollution, it is something that we need to be worried about. It’s much harder to detect since it happens under ground and is not so easy to see. There are tests that can be run to show you if the soil is healthy enough to be used.
If water is polluted, it could quite easily get into the soil and make the soil contaminated. When this happens the soil becomes less productive as the plants, flowers or trees do not grow as well. Many of the foods we actually eat have been affected by pollution in the soil and are usually not very good to eat. With the shortage of healthy plants to extract the carbon monoxide from the air, the quality of our air continues to get worse. Human blunder and negligence are the main causes to the soil pollution we have now. What has happened is leaky storage tanks filled with various chemicals are buried in the ground thus leaking dangerous chemicals into the soil. Sometimes, anything able to grow is destroyed, and very little is grown there for a long period of time.
Landfills is one other example of ways pollutants get into the soil. Previously waste from businesses and individuals was dumped in landfills, that did hardly any to safeguard the land. The water would pick up the various chemicals from the surface and soak into the soil. The chemical substances spread out by falling into underground rivers that take the chemicals to a variety of places. At least landfills are now doing a lot of things to protect the soil from the more deadly chemicals, like putting them in separate areas that have been lined with protective substances.
Another issue is the use of pesticides on plants and gardens. There are many organizations that are trying to convince the government to take actions to safeguard the soil. Through more strict laws on certain pesticides and the increase in organic farming, there’s hope that soil pollution will improve. A number of producers want to change by doing things like making use of biodegradable materials in their products. Of all the countries on the planet, the United States has the most serious problem with soil pollution. Advances in technological know-how and disregard for the environment are the reasons of the polluted soil.
Nevertheless, as more individuals find out about soil pollution, the more action is being taken to fix the problem. There have been programs popping up across the country to address and work on the soil pollution problem. As people begin to do more organic gardening and are being more health conscious, there is a very good chance that the problem with pollution in our soil can be fixed.
